1st day banjir for this year 2009

While people busy talking about how worst the flood that hit around some areas in Brunei Muara last 3 weeks, we here in our lovely kampung, welcoming the much anticipated rainy and flooding season. It's not so new to us, as this rainy and flooding happen frequently every rainy seasons throughout the whole year. So this year we welcome our first flooding season...Hurray!BTW, my kampung is in Tutong District, Kampung Ukong (sorry for the late introduction). This road is the easy access for our kampung villagers to go for work and school. This was taken at 10 a.m. and still accessible for a 4WD vehicle and those who brave enough to take the small car pass through.

Another alternative to go pass through the flooding water is just walking. (p/s: make sure you have some spare clothes in your car)

Another option and yet very convenient is the helping hands from the Jabatan Bandaran Daerah Tutong people(claps hands). The people there helped us last year too. So keep up the great job in helping us villagers to fulfill our duties to the nation. (Note: The truck operating from 6 a.m. till 8 p.m.)

Thousands of residents in rural areas of Tutong District have been cut off after floods left the roads inaccessible to traffic.Following the heavy downpour Tuesday night coupled with high tide, more than 160 houses were damaged in the flood.

Many residents were not able to get out of their homes after floodwater submerged the main road leading to rural areas. The floodwater was as high as two metres in some areas, leaving residents to move around in boats. The most devastated areas are Mukim Rambai, Mukim Lamunin and Mukim Ukong.

According to Awang Haji Omar bin Abdul Aziz, Penghulu of Mukim Ukong, "Most of the 2,000 residents in the mukim have been affected by the heavy rain.

"Many couldn't get out of their villages because the main road is submerged under water while many were unable to return home. Students were also unable to go to schools."

The Penghulu added that the flood and landslides have affected more than 20 houses.

Meanwhile, Haji Idris bin Hj Md Ali, the Tutong District Officer, said, "This is the worst flood since October last year," adding that safety is the main concern.

"Some areas that are not usually prone to floods were also affected by Tuesday night's heavy downpour. In case the safety of the residents is threatened by floodwaters, the Tutong District Office will evacuate them to higher ground," he said.

"Uniformed personnel are already lending a helping hand by ferrying them in trucks and boats from areas that are totally flooded," he added.

With regards to the situation in landslide-hit Jln Tanah Buruk, the Tutong District Officer said, "The water and electricity supplies have been restored, however, clearing the debris from the road is still in progress."

Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mohd Yusof, Minister of Home Affairs, visited the flood-affected areas yesterday.

An elderly man escaped from the jaws of a crocodile yesterday after he was attacked by the reptile in the flood-stricken Tutong District.

Awang Gubil Sipoi and his wife were checking a fish dragnet for their catch of the day at Sungai Ukong when a crocodile attacked him. The crocodile that lay under the calm floodwater, which was chest high, came up and grabbed Awang Gubil Sipoi's leg.

According to the 73-year-old victim, "I was shocked when the crocodile sprung from nowhere to grab my leg and I held on tightly to the stilt of my dragnet.

"The crocodile let go of my leg luckily but the attack injured my left leg. Fortunately, my wife was unharmed.

Medical personnel rushed to the scene to transport Awang Gubil Sipoi to the hospital.

It's the first time that a crocodile has attacked a person during the floods. The Tutong District Office has advised the residents of flooded areas to be cautious for their own safety.

The district office also urged residents not to allow their children to play in floodwater to avoid any unnecessary incidents.

Day 7: It's a beautiful day - Saturday | February 07, 2009

As we look up at the sky, we feel a bit relief to see the sun shine (for a moment). But the water down here is not as clear as the sky we see today. The water level is getting higher and we pray that it will not rain tonight and for the rest of the week.

What you should do if a landslide?

dscn6732

  • Stay alert and awake. Many debris-flow fatalities occur when people are sleeping. Listen to radio stations Kristal FM 90.7Mhz or Pelangi FM 91.4Mhz for warnings of intense rainfall. Be aware that intense, short bursts of rain may be particularly dangerous, especially after longer periods of heavy rainfall and damp weather.
  • If you are in areas susceptible to landslides and debris flows, consider leaving if it is safe to do so. Remember that driving during an intense storm can be hazardous. If you remain at home, move to a second story if possible. Staying out of the path of a landslide or debris flow saves lives.
  • Listen for any unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together. A trickle of flowing or falling mud or debris may precede larger landslides. Moving debris can flow quickly and sometimes without warning.
  • If you are near a stream or channel, be alert for any sudden increase or decrease in water flow and for a change from clear to muddy water. Such changes may indicate landslide activity upstream, so be prepared to move quickly. Don't delay! Save yourself, not your belongings.
  • Be especially alert when driving. Embankments along roadsides are particularly susceptible to landslides. Watch the road for collapsed pavement, mud, fallen rocks, and other indications of possible debris flows.

What to do if you are in a Landslide DANGER!!!

  • Contact your police department : 993
  • Inform affected neighbors. Your neighbors may not be aware of potential hazards. Advising them of a potential threat may help save lives. Help neighbors who may need assistance to evacuate.
  • Evacuate. Getting out of the path of a landslide or debris flow is your best protection.
  • Curl into a tight ball and protect your head if escape is not possible!
